What happened to mp3proradio?
mp3proradio is the name phonogenics went by between december 2005 and march 2008. It was felt the name locked us into the mp3PRO format which was starting to look increasingly defunct. We came up with a new name in mid-2007 and sat on it while we took time out to think about exactly what we wanted to do when we relaunched.
mp3proradio broadcast in the mp3PRO format at 64kbps. Players that fully supported this format presented an audio quality similar to what you'd expect to hear from a 128kbps mp3 stream.
Sadly most players didn't and still don't fully support the mp3PRO format and only played the 56kbps portion of the format that was encoded in standard mp3 - totally ignoring the additional mp3PRO portions that made all the difference.
What does Phonogenics stream at?
Phonogenics broadcasts in the standard mp3 format at a bitrate of 128kbps. The vast majority of audio players are fully capable of playing audio in this format at it's highest quality.
So what do you play?
Phonogenics is an open-minded station that plays a mixture of music from both established and independent artists covering many different genre's.
Do you make money?
No, Phonogenics is a non-profit making station run by people who just love to listen to music. In fact, each and every month we lose money hand over fist.
How about the banner adverts?
Okay, the Live365 VIP adverts do contribute towards the running of the station in that they could potentially reduce the amount we pay every month. You see, for every person who signs up for a VIP membership with Live365 we get a one off reward of $1.50 which goes towards subsidising our next monthly bill with Live365.
In reality people rarely click them and we always end the month financially worse off than when we started it. This is not my idea of making money.
So what's with the shop feature, surely you make money on this?
No, we provide this purely as a convenience to our listeners to aid them find what we're playing in a convenient way. We are not affiliated with any retailer and are more than happy to add additional retailers upon request.

Yes, we have a shop feature. Basically if you click on the track title or album title as it appears in the "playing now" area you'll be taken to a page about that track or album.
The track page features a drop down box that allows you to select a retailer to search for either the track or album.
The album page only features a drop down to search for the album.
We'll add to the range of retailers you can submit a search too as they are brought to our attention wherever possible.
